Ann Akimi Lofquist will be our DBS August demonstrator and she will be talking about tanuki. In tanuki bonsai, a living tree is joined to an interesting piece of deadwood to create a composite in the driftwood style.
Lofquist’s interest in bonsai was kick started by a summer spent with relatives in Japan in 1990. Ann has been experimenting with tanuki (phoenix grafting) and adding deadwood to existing trees for a number of years. An artist by profession, Lofquist enjoys the additive sculptural process of tanuki. While she does not consider these trees to be bonsai in a pure sense, Ann enjoys the constructive challenge of tanuki, which she sees as more akin to her painting process than traditional bonsai. Ann has had solo exhibitions of her landscape paintings in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Her exhibition “L.A. Vistas” is currently on display at Craig Krull Gallery in Santa Monica, through August 16.
